During the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X were the two biggest activists. They are also the two best known black leaders in the past century. Both fought for equal treatment of blacks and whites, though each took a very different approach.

Malcolm XMalcolm X grew very differently than MLK. His house was burned down and his father was killed by the KKK. By age 15 he was already in jail. While in jail, he taught himself, and he converted to Islam. He dropped his name of Malcolm Little and changed it to Malcolm X. He was a big activist and was also assassinated, though it was by a rival black Islamic group.
