Civil Rights Movement Begins:
Although the CVM gained momentum in the 1950's it mainly took place in the 1960's. There were many events that were very important to the CVM. The famous Rosa Parks, The Brown v. Board of Education, Little Rock Nine, and Sit ins all happened in the 60's. Also, the CVM gained a lot of attention due t the invention of television. People could now actually see the atrocities being committed against blacks, instead of just ignoring it. Also, once JFK became president, he started to show the American public that we cant hate the USSR for oppressing their people if we are doing the same thing. |
Background:Slavery had existed in the Unites States from the 1500's to 1864. However, as soon as slavery was ended, black people were still not exactly considered equal to the whites. Especially in the South during and after the Civil War, blacks were treated very harshly. Because of this, many Amendments were put in place to try and fix the problem, but they still did not make blacks equal to whites.
|
Plessy vs. Ferguson:Plessy vs. Ferguson was a Supreme Court Case that started when black men refused to exit a train reserved for whites. In the end, the court established the "separate but equal" rule. This rule required basically every public thing to be segregated.
|
Jim Crowe Laws:Jim Crowe was a character designed to make fun of black people. New, racist laws were known as “Jim Crowe Laws." These laws included segregation of public places, voting laws, where to walk, where to look, who to marry, etc.
