Kennedy's Assassination:
Kennedy and his wife attended a parade in Dallas, Texas. They rode down the streets in an open top car, when suddenly Kennedy was shot from a nearby building. He was rushed to a hospital and pronounced dead. The assassin was named Lee Harvey Oswald. When Oswald was arrested, a man from the crowd, Jack Ruby, stepped out and shot Oswald. The motive for killing Kennedy was never found. Lyndon B Johnson was Kennedy's successor. Lyndon B Johnson: LBJ became president immediately after Kennedy was assassinated. He was a very good president, but many of his good achievements are often overshadowed by the Vietnam War. He made some of the largest reforms in history since FDR's new deal. One of the biggest reforms was the Civil Rights Bill, which Kennedy worked on, but never finished. It banned discrimination based on race or gender in employment, and ended all segregation in public facilities. He also declared war on poverty, and set up a major volunteer system. He created Medicare, which is still widely used today. He also enacted the Voting Rights Act, which got rid of all literacy tests and other forms of voting discrimination. Another act of his was the immigration act, which removed all discriminatory immigration quotas. It is clear that he did a lot of good for civil rights, but much of that was overlooked when he started taking money out of welfare, and put it into the Vietnam War. |
