The 1950s came directly after the end of WWII and that fact is what really shaped the 50's. The economy boomed, suburban life bloomed, and the world became scared due to the cold war. American society became affluent, rich, and more advanced than ever. Suburbs began to pop up as areas for rich and middle class people to live in just outside major cities. Society began to shape itself into what it is today.
Along with the great society came the return of the Red scare. It spread through the Nation in the 20s, and it made a return in the 50s when the Soviets developed their own atomic weapons. This launched the cold war, a series of threats that never blossomed into any actual fighting between the USSR and the USA.
